# They Have Come Back!

A vertical photo-sheet (code SP-1091) says Ba Canh hamlet in Binh Dinh, once under neither Viet Cong nor government control, now has 796 residents and a building programme, and that 850 former residents have returned. Close portraits of a smiling 71-year-old man and two women carry quoted statements, one noting a husband killed by the Viet Cong. Named villagers speak in their own words as proof, and the sheet gives no figures on those who did not return.

THEY HAVE COME BACK!

For a long time Ba Canh Hamlet in Binh Dinh was an insecure area, under the control of neither the Viet Cong nor the National Government. More than half the population had migrated away, leaving only 796 people. But the life of the people of Ba Canh today is completely different: those who remained have made efforts to improve things, and a broad Construction programme is taking shape with the cooperation of the Rural Construction cadres. A school, a bridge, a water-supply system, a road and many handicraft workshops have been completed. Most important of all, 850 former residents have returned to the village. Here are a few of those who returned.

This 71-year-old grandfather has helped the women gather stones to build the dike and lay water pipes. He said happily: "I must leave something useful for my children and grandchildren, and this is the last chance."

Mrs. Le thi Hoa, wife of a bricklayer, said while cooking lunch: "We returned because this is our home village. We are making a living here again with a new hope."

Mrs. Tran thi Trung is volunteering to arrange stones for the bank of a water channel. Her husband was killed by the VC last year, leaving her with three young children. She said: "Before, I migrated away from this hamlet; later I heard about the improvements here and so came back to contribute."
