LA GRANDE BATTAGLIA
del giorno 26 ottobre
nell'oasi di Tripoli

15.000 Turco-Arabi con cavalleria ed artiglieria mossero contro tutta la linea dei nostri avamposti che sommavano a circa 6000 e 3000 di riserva. La battaglia, vinta brillantemente dagli Italiani, durò 4 ore e fu accanita specialmente nei pressi di Sciara el Sciat, Hemmi, Sidi Messra e Bumelliana ove l'84°, l'82° e il 40° fanteria dovettero far fronte al grosso dei nemici e caricarlo più volte alla baionetta. La nostra fanteria fu coadiuvata efficacemente dai soldati del reggimento Lodi, dalle batterie di sbarco e dalle batterie del 21° Artiglieria che aprirono sul nemico un fuoco infernale.
L' 11° Bersaglieri che si era coperto di gloria nella battaglia del 23 e messo all'ordine del giorno, diede nuova prova d'intrepido valore sbaragliando il nemico che s'annidava nei boschi fra Sciara ed Hemmi. I bersaglieri furono benissimo aiutati dalle mitragliatrici e dall'Artiglieria da fortezza.
Il nemico ebbe 2000 morti, 4000 feriti e numerosi prigionieri. I nostri ebbero 374 morti e 158 feriti fra le due giornate del 23 e del 26.

Le bandiere tricolori indicano la linea dei nostri avamposti e quelle rosse le posizioni occupate dal nemico. La strada segnata con bandiere rosse è quella che conduce a Gharian probabile quartiere Generale dei Turco - Arabi.

THE GREAT BATTLE
of 26 October
in the oasis of Tripoli

15,000 Turco-Arabs with cavalry and artillery moved against the whole line of our outposts, which totalled about 6000 with 3000 in reserve. The battle, brilliantly won by the Italians, lasted 4 hours and was fiercest especially around Sciara el Sciat, Hemmi, Sidi Messra and Bumelliana, where the 84th, the 82nd and the 40th infantry had to face the bulk of the enemy and charge it several times with the bayonet. Our infantry was effectively assisted by the soldiers of the Lodi regiment, by the landing batteries and by the batteries of the 21st Artillery, which opened an infernal fire on the enemy.
The 11th Bersaglieri, who had covered themselves in glory in the battle of the 23rd and been mentioned in orders of the day, gave fresh proof of intrepid valour by routing the enemy who was nesting in the woods between Sciara and Hemmi. The bersaglieri were very well helped by the machine guns and by the fortress artillery.
The enemy had 2000 dead, 4000 wounded and numerous prisoners. Ours had 374 dead and 158 wounded across the two days of the 23rd and the 26th.

The tricolour flags mark the line of our outposts and the red ones the positions occupied by the enemy. The road marked with red flags is the one leading to Gharian, probable headquarters of the Turco-Arabs.
