# British Women Guard the Home Front

A colour photograph shows a woman warden and a male colleague with an L.C.C. ambulance (Stoke Newington) and its woman driver, with a Union Jack 'For Freedom' emblem. The tell is the stock virtue phrasing, women 'unflinching and unfailingly cheerful in the face of sudden death and destruction', in place of any measure of service.

```
BRITISH WOMEN
GUARD THE HOME FRONT
THERE ARE WOMEN IN EVERY TYPE OF CIVIL DEFENCE except "heavy rescue." Side by side with the men, women wardens patrol the streets at the height of a blitz. Women ambulance drivers remained at their posts during the heaviest raids, unflinching and unfailingly cheerful in the face of sudden death and destruction. So more men are freed for the fighting line.
FOR FREEDOM
