# Youth Forum poster, World Youth Forum delegates (English poster distributed in Beirut)

A two-panel photo poster headed 'Youth Forum: Students from 35 Nations Meet to Exchange Ideas'. Photographs show African and other delegates to the World Youth Forum at the U.S. Capitol, with host families in Richmond, at Monticello, at Princeton and at a VISTA briefing, with a caption for each. The tell is plain-folks: ordinary hosts, dances and breakfast tables present American life as open and friendly, and glittering-generalities: 'understanding among peoples and nations'.

YOUTH
FORUM

Students from 35 Nations
Meet to Exchange Ideas

The four young people shown on the steps of the United States Capitol in Washington, D. C., were among the outstanding students from 35 countries who were delegates to the World Youth Forum, recently concluded in New York City.
The quartet above represents Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the United States. Altogether five students came from African nations to the Forum, which was sponsored by the New York Herald Tribune, a leading U. S. newspaper. The delegates were secondary school youngsters with brilliant scholastic records, chosen by the Ministries of Education of their respective countries. The purpose of the Forum is to bring together in meaningful contact young people of diverse cultures but with similar interests, thereby furthering understanding among peoples and nations.
For 15 weeks the delegates lived with American families, attended classes in high schools, participated in public discussions and asked questions of American leaders in many fields.
Although based in the New York area, the students made trips to Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Virginia; Boston, Massachusetts, and other cities to become acquainted with Americans in different parts of the country and to see how they live and what they do.
The five African nations were represented by the following delegates:
Ethiopia: AKLOG BIRARA, 18, from Gondar, says he is interested in a career devoted to furthering peace among all men.
Kenya: PETER RUORO, 22, from Thika, is interested in journalism. He has had several short stories published in Kenya.
Liberia: EMANUEL SHAW, 18, from Robertsport, intends to make aeronautics and airline management his chosen field.
Nigeria: OLUSEGUN BUCKNOR, 18, from Lagos, says he is studying sociology to prepare for an extensive study of modern Nigerian society.
Sierra Leone: HAWA TEJAN-JALLOH, 18, from Freetown is studying writing, and plans to specialize in African literature.

The delegates' social activities in Richmond, Virginia, were climaxed by an evening of group singing and dancing with their young American hosts at the John Marshall Hotel. ABOVE, LEFT: Among the enthusiastic vocalists were African delegates Aklog Birara, Emanuel Shaw and Olusegun Bucknor. ABOVE, RIGHT: In the ballroom, the Forum delegates soon were doing the latest steps, as shown by Hawa Tejan-Jalloh (Sierra Leone) who danced with Farouk Chowdhury (Pakistan; back to camera).
