# 1792: George Washington

- **When:** 1792

On this page

**In one line:** Washington was re-elected with every elector's vote while the contest for vice president, between John Adams and George Clinton, was the divided one; no campaign literature is catalogued in this archive.

## Context

Washington received 132 electoral votes, one from every elector. John Adams received 77 and was re-elected vice president. George Clinton received 50, Thomas Jefferson 4 and Aaron Burr 1. The National Archives lists Washington as Independent and Adams as Federalist [1]; the American Presidency Project lists Washington as "unofficially Federalist" [2]. Under the rules then in force each elector cast two votes, so the vice-presidential candidates also appear in the presidential count [1].

Washington is generally held to have run unopposed, with support across the emerging parties. The Federalists backed Adams for vice president and the Democratic-Republicans backed Clinton [3]. The sources fetched do not describe campaign media for this year.
