# 1808: James Madison

- **When:** 1808

On this page

**In one line:** James Madison (Democratic-Republican) defeated Charles C. Pinckney (Federalist) and a dissident Democratic-Republican, George Clinton; this page lists the candidates and records that no campaign literature for the year is catalogued.

## Context

James Madison of Virginia (Democratic-Republican) received 122 electoral votes, Charles C. Pinckney of South Carolina (Federalist) 47, and George Clinton of New York, who ran for president as an independent Democratic-Republican, 6, all from New York; Clinton was also elected vice president with 113 votes. One Kentucky elector did not vote [1]. The American Presidency Project lists electoral votes only for this year [2]. A cross-check source notes that the Embargo Act of 1807 was unpopular and that Madison carried most states outside New England [3].

## Campaign literature

No campaign literature for 1808 is catalogued in this archive. A search of the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs catalogue (about 28 queries across 1808, 1812, 1816 and 1820, using candidate names with "campaign", "broadside", "ticket" and "election 1808") returned only portraits, architectural records and items from other periods, nothing tied to the campaigns. This does not show that nothing survives.
