# Identity fusion:when doubting the claim means leaving the group

**By the end:** Tell an appeal to shared identity from one that makes questioning a claim feel like disloyalty, and check whether a member can doubt the claim and still belong. About 8 minutes.

1. ## What it is — ### Definition — Collapse checking the claim into betraying the tribe, so method-critique feels like treason. — ### The tell — 'People like us don't ask that' or 'that's what they would say.' — ### Not this — Shared identity offered as context, not as a gag on evidence. — Identity fusion joins a group identity to a claim, a leader or a policy, so that checking the claim feels like betraying the group. — The tell is a sentence like "People like us don't ask that" or "That's what they would say." A question about evidence gets an answer about the questioner's loyalty. — The look-alike that is *not* this technique is a shared identity offered as context, with the claim still open to checking. — ![](https://propagandaarchive.org/static/generated/technique-cards/identity-fusion.jpg) — Illustration, not an archive object
2. ## How it works — The move has three parts. — It usually runs from the top down and then sideways. Irving Janis (1972) called members who shield a leader from unwelcome information "self-appointed mindguards". The penalties differ enormously, from career damage to labour camp or execution, and that difference in scale is part of the record.
  - **Join.** A group identity is tied to a claim, a leader or a policy: the nation is the leader, the movement is its current line.
  - **Reduce.** Positions shrink to two, inside and outside. There is no place for a member who shares the identity but doubts the claim.
  - **Label.** The outside gets a word such as "enemy of the people", "un-American", "anti-national" or "traitor". Anyone asking for evidence has already chosen a side.
3. ## Why it works on people — People draw part of their self-esteem from their groups (Tajfel and Turner, 1979). Researchers on identity fusion (Swann and colleagues, 2009, 2012) describe a stronger state in which the line between self and group becomes porous, so a threat to the group is felt as a threat to the self. — Read the research
  - **Identity-protective thinking.** Dan Kahan and colleagues (2007, 2012) found that people weigh evidence on charged questions in ways that protect their standing in their groups.
  - **Integration.** Jacques Ellul (1962) called this integration propaganda: it need not persuade anyone of the claim, only make doubt feel like leaving.
  - **Stopper phrases.** Robert Jay Lifton (1961) described the "thought-terminating cliché", a loaded phrase that ends a line of inquiry.

4. ## Same device, different stakes (1 of 3) — Three real objects from the archive. The technique is the same in each; the setting, the choice the audience had and what was at stake are not. — ![Ein Volk, ein Führer, ein Ja (One People, One Leader, One Yes)](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/images/ein-volk-ein-fuehrer-ein-ja-1933.jpg) — **Ein Volk, ein Führer, ein Ja (One People, One Leader, One Yes)** · Nov 1933 · National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) · [Full record](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/ein-volk-ein-fuehrer-ein-ja-1933/) — **Notice:** A banner several storeys high in Berlin reads 'One people, one leader, one Yes.' Nation, leader and the answer become one thing, so a No reads as stepping outside the people. Only NSDAP candidates stood in the election, and the ballot offered no alternative list. The party is the state that runs the vote. — [Read the full record and source](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/ein-volk-ein-fuehrer-ein-ja-1933/)
5. ## Same device, different stakes (2 of 3) — ![The Bombay Chronicle reports a foreign-cloth bonfire (1921)](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/images/bombay-chronicle-cloth-bonfire-1921.jpg) — **The Bombay Chronicle reports a foreign-cloth bonfire (1921)** · Jul 30, 1921 · Indian National Congress (Non-Cooperation movement) · [Full record](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/bombay-chronicle-cloth-bonfire-1921/) — **Notice:** A newspaper reports a public bonfire of foreign cloth during Gandhi's Non-Cooperation campaign. Owning foreign-made cloth became a visible test of loyalty to the swaraj movement instead of a private consumer choice. The sender here is a mass movement, not the state; the archive's notes record voluntary participation alongside documented coercion of non-compliant merchants. — [Read the full record and source](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/bombay-chronicle-cloth-bonfire-1921/)
6. ## Same device, different stakes (3 of 3) — !['Z #заПутина' LED billboard](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/images/z-za-putina-billboard-2022-640.jpg) — **'Z #заПутина' LED billboard** · Sep 24, 2022 · Unidentified operator of an outdoor display in Russia (pro-war 'Z' campaign) · [Full record](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/z-za-putina-billboard-2022/)Content note: Pro-war 'Z' symbol supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine; displaying it is restricted by law in some countries. — **Notice:** An LED billboard joins a white Z, the Russian tricolour and the hashtag 'for Putin', so backing the operation and backing the man read as one act. Its operator is unidentified, but the Z symbol was promoted by state media, officials, businesses and schools. The setting is a war under way, and the sign asks for nothing except the equation. — [Read the full record and source](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/z-za-putina-billboard-2022/)
7. ## Check yourself — A union tells its members, 'We are in this together, so please honour the picket line,' and gives its reasons and figures for the dispute. Is that identity fusion? — Show the answer — **No. It appeals to solidarity while the claims stay open to checking. It would become identity fusion if the identity were used to shut down questions about the facts.** Right. A shared identity offered as context is not the technique. It begins when membership is used to police what members may ask.
8. ## Spot it in the archive — ![Salzburg 20-Kronen "Anschluss" voucher (1921)](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/images/salzburg-anschluss-voucher-20-kronen-1921-640.jpg) — 1921 · Landesregierung Salzburg (provincial government of Salzburg); printed by Zaunrith'sche Buchdruckerei · [Full record](https://propagandaarchive.org/collection/salzburg-anschluss-voucher-20-kronen-1921/) — In 1921 a provincial government printed this 20-Kronen note, redeemable after a vote on union with Germany. Between the denominations it carries the line 'We Germans want to be Germans!' Which technique is doing the work? — Show the answer — **Identity fusion** The slogan equates being German with voting for one political outcome, and the note gives no argument for it. Anyone who votes otherwise is placed outside the group. Notice that the appeal is to who you are, not to how many others agree or to a virtue word.

  - Does the message tell you who you are before it tells you what happened?
  - Is there a place for someone who shares the identity but doubts this claim, or are the only options loyal and traitor?
  - Does a label such as 'traitor' or 'anti-national' come with a specific charge and evidence, or does it stand in for them?
  - Swap the sides: would you accept the same label, aimed at your own group's critics, as an argument?
