In one line: four Democratic-Republican candidates split the vote, no one won an electoral majority, and the House of Representatives chose John Quincy Adams although Andrew Jackson led in both popular and electoral votes; no campaign literature for the year is catalogued.
Context
The Federalists no longer ran a national candidate, and all four leading candidates are listed by NARA and the American Presidency Project as Democratic-Republicans [1][2]. Electoral votes were Jackson 99, Adams 84, William H. Crawford 41 and Henry Clay 37, of 261; a majority was 131. Popular votes were Jackson 151,271 (41.3%), Adams 113,122 (30.9%), Clay 47,531 (13.0%) and Crawford 40,856 (11.2%), out of 365,833. Six states (Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, New York, South Carolina and Vermont) chose electors by state legislature, so those states have no popular count [2].
With no majority, the House voted by state delegation: Adams received 13 states, Jackson 7 and Crawford 4. John C. Calhoun was elected vice president [1]. A cross-check source describes the contest as following the collapse of Federalist competition after the War of 1812 [3].
Campaign literature
No campaign literature for 1824 is catalogued in this archive. No campaign item for this election has been catalogued, and the survey for this year is not complete: the Library of Congress catalogue has not been searched for 1824 as it was for 1808 to 1820, and other repositories have not been searched. This does not show that nothing survives.
