La Domenica del Corriere, 1 August 1943, back cover: 'Dopo l'incursione su Roma' (Milan)
Colour back page of the weekly: a white-robed Pope kneels and raises a hand before the roofless, rubble-strewn front of a church while a dense crowd of dark-clothed people kneels around him. The printed caption reads 'After the incursion on Rome. The Pontiff visits the ruins of the Basilica of San Lorenzo outside the Walls, kneels in prayer and then blesses the crowd.' The tell: the raid is called an 'incursione' and the attacker is not named; the picture offers grief and a religious figure rather than any account of who flew the raid or why.
