Het Communistisch oproer in West-Java: De Burgerwacht (The Communist Uprising in West Java: The Civic Guard), Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië
First page of a Batavia daily, Monday 22 November 1926, ten days after the Communist-led uprising began in West Java. Under the heading 'Het Communistisch oproer in West-Java', the paper prints a civic-guard committee's notice with running sign-up counts by firm and government department ('Justitie houdt het record!') and the line that applications 'keep coming in an unbroken stream'. The tell: enlistment is argued from the tally and the stream of others joining (bandwagon).

No. 275. Maandag 22 November 1926. 31e Jaargang. HET NIEUWS VAN DEN DAG VOOR NEDERLANDSCH-INDIË Hoofdredactie: H. MULDER en THEO KOEMANS. Eerste Blad.
No. 275. Monday 22 November 1926. 31st year. THE NEWS OF THE DAY FOR THE NETHERLANDS INDIES Editors-in-chief: H. MULDER and THEO KOEMANS. First Sheet. Netherlands Indies. The Communist uprising in West Java. The Civic Guard. We received from the committee for the call-up of members for a civic guard at Batavia and Mr. Cornelis the following communication: [...] It appears from the above letter of the committee that, besides a full battalion, a first company of the second corps is also already complete; the applications of 128 men received today up to 1.30 p.m. make this section too almost full. And the applications keep coming in in an unbroken stream. Many still make their excuses that they are so late. This is understandable, but one should not forget that the will to uphold authority may never come too late: timely help is in such a case an imperative requirement. (Later). We received a further application of 11 men, of whom 10 from Eigen Hulp. Two more men, and the 2nd company is ready! (Later). Officials of the Department of Justice inform us that another application of forty men is coming. 'Justice' holds the record! Financial support from the Soviets. According to Aneta-Reuter from Riga, it appears from the reports on the communist riotlets on Java in the Izvestia that Moscow sent large sums of money to Java last year, supposedly as support for the imprisoned Javanese revolutionaries. In the Bantam region. No uprising without salt! The more facts come to our knowledge by degrees, the more we are astonished at the, we may safely call it 'boundless indifference' with which the course of events in the Bantam region has been regarded by the administration.
Selected passages only, in page order by column (the full page is dense newspaper text and the transcription is limited to the headline block, the civic-guard notice, and two further headed items). '[...]' marks omitted text. The printed spellings 'Isvestija', 'compie.' and 'o.w.' are kept as printed. The 'Eigen Hulp' named in the sign-up list is a group name printed as such.
