ALLIANCE FOR PROGRESS
Roads for Economic Development
Are Being Built under the Alliance for Progress

The first two sections of Central American regional highways, which will help foster economic growth and shorten the distance between Managua and Tegucigalpa, will be built with United States financial aid under the Alliance for Progress programme.

The United States will lend the Central American Bank for Economic Integration $4.5 million, which in turn will be lent to Nicaragua to carry out the project.

A 98-kilometre road will join Choluteca, Honduras, with Puente Real, Nicaragua. Another road, from Danli, Honduras, to Ocotal, Nicaragua, of 60 kilometres, is the second route of the project.

Nicaragua's contribution to the two roads is $1.5 million.

Also, under the Alliance, two United States loans of $8 million have contributed to building 273 kilometres of roads in Nicaragua that will link farming regions with urban markets. These projects include: [list of road sections as printed above].

The development of these projects pursues one of the goals of the Alliance for Progress, to "accelerate the integration of Latin America, with the same aim of strengthening the economic and social development of the Continent".

A Highway Department bulldozer prepares the ground on the 20-kilometre Yalaguina-Ocotal route, one of the many projects built with United States loans under the Alliance for Progress.
