Arirang Mass Games: national flag formed by card-holding performers, Pyongyang (photographed 2007)
A photograph from the stands of an Arirang mass-games performance in 2007 shows the red star and white disc of the DPRK flag formed as a huge card-stunt display by thousands of children holding coloured placards. The tell is identity fusion: each performer is only one pixel of the national emblem, so the individual and the state image become one. Context: the spectacle was state-organised in Pyongyang during the Kim Jong Il period.
