Democratic ticket, "Liberty & equal rights" (Ohio electors for Van Buren and Johnson), 1836
Printed ticket for Van Buren and Johnson with Ohio electors, headed by a wood engraving of Van Buren as the 'Magician'; the legible lettering on the sheet is MAGICIAN, U.S. MINT and LIBERTY & EQUAL RIGHTS. LOC's description reads the picture as a lantern projecting onto the Capitol, with Jackson's sword and bugle at his feet. Tells: glittering generalities (virtue words with no testable claim) and, on LOC's reading of the sword and bugle, transfer of the outgoing president's standing to his successor.
