The prose renders 'the triumphal entry of Cipriano Castro' as spring, butterflies and 'divine fire', calls him 'magnanimous and strong', and ties the crowd to Carabobo, Ayacucho and Bolívar. The tells are the virtue-word imagery and the borrowed heroic lineage that attaches Castro to Bolívar's legacy.

LEAF OF A DAILY
4TH OF JULY

[italic lead:] Harmony! Heavenly Spring pours her cornucopia over the earth at the triumphal entry of Cipriano Castro. The charm of nature is the fitting emblem of the public rejoicing. Souls and things burn with divine fire. The air fills with butterflies; the spirit with dreams. Cipriano Castro is magnanimous and strong; words of fraternity and of amnesty go before him, like swarms of condors and doves. I synthesise in a symbol the springtime decorum and the glory of the people.

Perhaps the gusts tear off all the petals of the nearby gardens in a feast of flowers and in the kingdom of Spring. A trembling swarm of butterflies passes, with soft and gentle wandering, before my balcony. In the golden air floats the soul of the corollas. Invisible hands pour out roses and more roses, which shed their petals in the wind. The joy of the world bursts into solar kisses, into aromas and murmurs. The flutes of the grove keep time to the song of the saps, and the sky opens its infinite blue corolla. Flight of butterflies or swarm of winged and fragile petals that invisible hands pour into the golden air: joy! The earth bubbles with jubilation and Spring passes in the triumphal chariot. The gardens greet in flowers; the sun in light. Psyche descends upon the earth; her wings, two divine flames, burn and vibrate in harmonious flight. The universal and pagan soul revives in the mystery of spring and, as in ancient time, the Panic choruses celebrate the rejoicing of mortals and the charm of nature, in the reeds of the fountains and in the zither of the foliage.

Spring pours her amphorae full of honey and wine over souls. It is the orgy of dream. Like the trembling swarm of butterflies or of golden petals, a troop of larks flies up singing the song of hearts. They spread their wings to the sun of the East, which gilds them; and the jubilation of the multitudes greets the great hope, which shakes its mantle in the ether and showers the earth with gems. The crowd gathers the gleaming treasure; in every soul shines a rare stone of clear radiance, which in the light of the sun flashes a living fire of love. The soul of the people is beautiful and rough, like its hand, harsh and noble. In it sleep the seed-pearl diamond or the ruby of ardent blood; they only wait for the thinker or the Hero who will speak the secret word or strike with the point of steel the crust of the rock, in whose heart lies hidden the rare and gleaming stone. Thus the miracle of heroism; the miracle of patriotism; and the miracle of idealism. The soul of the ancestors was deaf and dark; the soldier of Carabobo was not sketched in it, nor the expeditionary of Ayacucho. What iron arm would lead the Colombian oriflamme, gold, sky and blood, across the Andean snows? Bolívar exhumed from the shadows the rare precious stone lost in the soul of the people. And that hidden diamond blazed with fierce flames.

A new heroic cycle revives the lofty virtues of the past. Generous and strong, like a lion of legend, popular feeling escorts the Paladin, who is a Knight of the Fatherland. And in a vision of other days, there passes beneath the sonorous thunder of the fanfares the procession of the national rainbow, victorious and radiant.

The golden note of the bugles tears through the golden air. The crowds greet the triumphal cortege with jubilation; the pride of the arches bows; flowers and palms quiver in the wind.

It is a day of glory, of spring and of sun.
