"Alhucemas por España" (El Telegrama del Rif, front page, 9 September 1925)
Front page of the Melilla daily El Telegrama del Rif, self-described as 'apolitical, defender of the interests of Spain in Morocco', under the banner 'Alhucemas for Spain' the day after the Franco-Spanish landing in Alhucemas Bay. The lead column closes on the 'race that discovered worlds and always laboured for humanity and civilisation, for science and art'. The tell is the virtue vocabulary standing in for any testable claim, set beside a page of war reports, a map and the cry 'Long live Spain! Long live the Army of Africa!'.

THE TELEGRAM OF THE RIF APOLITICAL DAILY, DEFENDER OF THE INTERESTS OF SPAIN IN MOROCCO WEDNESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 1925.-Year XXIV.-No. 8,666 Single copy, TEN centimos. Subscription for the provinces, 9 pesetas per quarter FOUNDED IN THE YEAR 1902 BY ITS OWNER AND DIRECTOR CÁNDIDO LOBERA GIRELA Editorial, Administration and Printing: Calle Canalejas, no. 16 ALHUCEMAS FOR SPAIN The news travelled with the speed of thought as the faithful were leaving prayer before the image of Our Lady of Victories, whose feast was being celebrated, flooding souls with joy and opening hearts to hope. Yes, it was true. The Spanish troops had set foot on the accursed land of Alhucemas. Alhucemas! A fateful name for Spaniards, because all the rebellions had germinated there and all the aggressions had been incubated there that since 1909 have bled our dear Spain. Yes, it was true that the indomitable courage of the self-sacrificing Army of Africa had launched itself at the assault of the batteries sited on the huge masses of the 'morros' and planted the national flag on the command posts, amid the roar of the artillery of France and Spain in deadly salvoes, the din of the bombs, of the aircraft of the two countries and the sharp hammering of machine guns and rifles of the most intrepid soldiers in the world. Yes, it was true that the ghost of Alhucemas was beginning to fade, thanks to the wise plan drawn up by the illustrious Marquis of Estella, the skill of General Sanjurjo and of Generals Saro and Fernández Pérez and Soriano; of Admirals Hallier and Joli, and the bravery of the forces of sea and land in close collaboration. The nightmare has passed. Mistrust has ceased and breasts bathe in optimism. For those who have set foot on the 'morros' will know how to finish the great work entrusted to them. Yes, let us have faith in the high destinies of the race that discovered worlds and always laboured for humanity and civilisation, for science and art. The fruit of so many sacrifices, so much blood and so much gold spilled, will be the firm and solid peace that restores to the Metropolis the tranquillity lost. A day of joy and glory was yesterday, a great day of triumph, to which Nature added her pomp, an encouraging and historic date, which invites us to cry out, with the energies of our patriotic souls: Long live Spain! Long live the Army of Africa! Long live its leaders! and Long live France!, which shares with Spain these jubilant hours. FACING SIDI-DRIS AND QUILATES THE OCCUPATION OF MORRO NUEVO THE BAY OF ALHUCEMAS, FIELD OF THE STRUGGLE [remaining columns of reports, map and subheadings not transcribed]
Read from a 1280 px scan, enlarged where needed. Only the masthead, headline, the whole lead column and three subheadings are transcribed; the report columns and map labels are not. 'morros' is printed so (in Spanish 'morro' is a headland or rock and 'moro' is Moor) and is kept as printed. 'Joli' for the French admiral is as printed. Translation is literal and machine-made, not checked by a fluent reader.
