He Shouts for Bryan, but This Is the Way He Will Vote (Puck cover, 25 July 1900)
Cover by Louis Dalrymple for Puck, 25 July 1900 (v. 47, no. 1220). A man in a top hat, a sash lettered 'Tammany' and tiger-striped trousers waves a flag reading 'Hurrah for Bryan' while dropping a ballot marked 'McKinley' into a ballot box labelled 'Nov. Election'; 'Stocks and Bonds' is lettered on his coat pocket. The cartoon asserts that a named machine's public support for Bryan is insincere. The Tammany label and the tiger stripes attach a ready-made stigma to the figure ([[transfer]], [[name-calling]]); the claim about his private vote is the cartoonist's, not a record.
