How to Plant Trees (Arabic poster distributed in Tripoli, Libya)
An Arabic instruction sheet titled 'How to plant trees', with ten numbered photographs of Libyan men in white caps and robes digging a hole, lifting a seedling from its container, firming the soil, hollowing a basin for rain and fencing the sapling with thorns against animals. A boxed text on the importance of trees says they moderate climate and supply fuel and building wood. The tell is plain-folks: local farmers demonstrate the steps, and the sheet gives practical instruction without argument.

How to plant trees 1 and 2 Dig with the spade (shovel) or the hoe (digger) a hole 60 centimetres deep and with an opening of 60 or 100 square centimetres. 3 - Take the tree gently out of its container and do not hurt its roots and do not break up the lump of soil around the roots. 4 - When planting the Sant (acacia) or the eucalyptus, bury the tree in the hole up to the middle of its trunk. As for trees with cone-shaped fruits such as cypress and pine, bury them in the hole up to the surface of the container in which they were planted [wording uncertain]. 5 - After returning the soil into the hole around the trunk of the tree, press it with your feet until you remove the air spaces from it. The last layer of soil on the surface of the hole must remain loose, not hard, so that it keeps moisture. 6 - Leave around the trunk of the tree (base) a hollow in which rain water collects. [illegible] some of the leaves of seedlings of trees such as the sant and the eucalyptus. Do not remove [illegible] of the cone-fruited kinds such as cypress and pine. 7 - Removing (stripping) some of the leaves from the seedling enables it to survive in dry weather. 8 - Look after your trees and protect them from animals. 9 - A barrier (fence) of thorns around the tree prevents animals from harming the newly planted trees. 10 - Animals cannot harm this tree. The Importance of Trees Trees are an important factor in moderating and improving the climate, and a source of national wealth especially in agricultural countries like Libya. They are therefore a great necessity, and their loss or scarcity is a great problem, especially in countries generally short of fuel and of wood needed for building, tanning and other purposes. Therefore tree planting was very important in Libya, and correct planting was necessary to increase the trees there and to ensure their growth until they become forests. This booklet was prepared to help the Libyan farmer plant his trees in the correct way that ensures the survival and growth of the planted trees. The Department of Agriculture in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, with the cooperation of "LATAS", works to increase the production of nurseries [illegible] if the Libyan farmers used it, it would be useful to them and to their country. Following the stages of the tree-planting method shown on this leaflet means many and good trees [illegible].
