Framed street portrait of Hafez, Bassel and Bashar al-Assad (Damascus, 25 May 2006)
A framed painted portrait mounted on a stone wall shows three men in dark suits in head-and-shoulders view: an older man in the centre, a younger man on the left with a beard and a younger man on the right with a moustache. A red, white and black ribbon with two green stars, the colours of the Syrian flag of the time, runs across the bottom of the frame. The tells are the three generations of one family presented as a single set and the national colours wrapped around them, which pair the ruling family with the state symbol.
