Content note: 1864 Democratic print using a racial slur. This object is shown as it was published. Why
Political caricature. No. 3, The abolition catastrophe. Or the November smash-up
Lithograph published in New York by G.W. Bromley & Co. for the Democratic (McClellan) side. A train marked 'Union' and led by an engine labelled 'Democracy' carries McClellan and cheering passengers toward the White House, while the Republican train lies wrecked on rocks labelled 'Emancipation' and 'Confiscation' beneath a '$400,000,000 public debt'. Passenger captions use the label 'Miscegenationists' and a racial slur, and announce 'Thus ends the Abolition Party!'.
