Content note: Recruitment notice for a Waffen-SS division, with calls to fight 'the Bolshevik mortal enemy' This object is shown as it was published. Why
Aufruf / Zaklyk: call to join the SS-Schützendivision Galizien (Sanok)
A photograph of a torn-cornered bilingual notice on a wooden board: a German 'Aufruf' on the left and a Ukrainian 'Zaklyk' on the right, signed by the district chief, calling young Galician Ukrainians to enlist in the SS-Schützendivision Galizien. The tell: 'faith and homeland, family and soil' and 'the just new order of Europe' stand in for terms, and enlistment is tied to the fathers' service in the old Austrian army.

AUFRUF. Sanok, Mai 1943. Dr. Hofstetter Kreishauptmann. [Ukrainian column: parallel text, not transcribed; see notes]
CALL. [illegible] the solemn proclamation of the SS rifle [division Galicia] the following call was published by the Governor [of the District of] Galicia: [illegible] the military-age youth of Galicia! Since the expulsion of the Bolshevik [rulers] by the victorious struggle of the German soldier, the population of Galicia has given numerous proofs of its gratitude. The Galician peasant has worked dutifully and diligently and contributed to feeding Europe; the Galician worker [illegible] in the factories and on the oilfields, and also in the offices and counting-houses, has stood his man with all his strength. An army of Galician men and women in the Reich produces bread and weapons for victory in agriculture and industry. Again and again the wish was voiced from the Galician-Ukrainian population to be allowed to take part in the Reich's struggle with weapons in hand. The Fuhrer has now, in recognition of Galicia's proven record, met this eager urging and approved the raising of the SS Rifle Division Galicia. Every member of this division is placed on an equal footing with the German soldier in equipment, pay, rations and the securing of his family members' upkeep. Pastoral care of the volunteers is provided by clergy of their own confession and nationality. As members of the division the volunteers wear their ethnic badge. Preference is given to applications from volunteers whose fathers served honourably in the old imperial-royal Austrian army. Galician-Ukrainian youth! You are thereby entitled and called upon to take part in the struggle against the Bolshevik mortal enemy, to take part in the struggle for faith and homeland, for family and soil, for the just new order of the victorious young Europe. For centuries your fathers stood in Europe against the onrushing East; prove yourself anew in this fateful hour." Following a repeatedly expressed wish, the Governor for the District of Krakow, SS-Brigadefuhrer and Major General of Police Dr. Wendler, has permitted the registration of the military-age Ukrainian youth of the Kreishauptmannschaft Sanok for the SS Rifle Division Galicia. Ukrainian youth of the Kreishauptmannschaft Sanok! Prove once more, by deed, your so often shown readiness for action. Sanok, May 1943. Dr. Hofstetter District Chief (Kreishauptmann). CALL. [Ukrainian parallel column not transcribed]
The German column is read from a 1280 px photograph; the folded top-left corner hides the starts of several lines ([illegible]). The Ukrainian column is a parallel version and is only partly legible at this resolution, so only its heading is given. Translation is FRAME's own literal rendering, machine-assisted and not verified by a fluent reader.
