Putting Power in Paul's Pitching, 1939 US cartoon: A large central portrait of a Cincinnati pitcher, labelled Paul Derringer

Putting Power in Paul's Pitching

A large central portrait of a Cincinnati pitcher, labelled Paul Derringer, is ringed by small comic panels: a Yankee batter complaining about a strikeout, an umpire and a protesting player, and a batter flinching from a pitch. The tell is admiring build-up of a sports figure through praise language ('sharp-breaking curve', 'gets his hits when they're needed'); it is a preview feature rather than political persuasion, so the technique is a weak fit.
