Chollima Statue, Mansu Hill, Pyongyang (photographed 2014)
A large bronze figure of a rider on a winged horse, one arm raised holding a paper, is mounted on a tall tapering stone pedestal on a hillside in Pyongyang, with trees and visitors in the foreground. The Chollima is a winged horse of Korean legend said to cover a thousand ri in a day, and gave its name to the production-speed campaign of the late 1950s. The tell: glittering generalities, a legend of speed and national greatness stands in for any production target or measurable claim.
