The consumer consumed
Harper's Weekly cover, 7 April 1888, signed W. A. Rogers. A buyer with a basket marked "Consumer" stands between a "Domestic Goods" counter ("If you buy here you must pay blood-money to a trust") and an "Imported Goods" counter ("If you buy here you must pay war duties"). It argues for tariff reform, the Democratic ticket's position; "blood-money" and "war duties" are loaded labels and only the two charges are shown.
