Leaders of the Democratic Party: The Rioter Seymour, the Butcher Forrest, the Pirate Semmes, the Hangman Hampton
Four-panel broadside from the 1868 campaign. Under the heading 'Leaders of the Democratic Party', caricatures of Horatio Seymour ('The Rioter'), Nathan Bedford Forrest ('The Butcher'), Raphael Semmes ('The Pirate') and Wade Hampton ('The Hangman') each stand over printed extracts from their own speeches or official reports, among them Seymour's 1863 speeches, the report on Fort Pillow and Semmes's July 1868 speech at Mobile. The ticket's presidential nominee is set beside Confederate officers by selected quotation.
