滿洲中央銀行百圓 (Central Bank of Manchukuo, 100 yuan note, 1944)
Obverse of a 100-yuan note of a state set up under Japanese military occupation: an elderly bearded man in scholar's dress with a topknot (the Commons category identifies Confucius) at right, a tiered pavilion building among trees at left, dragons coiling in the corner panels and a flower-shaped seal at top centre, under the bank's name in large characters. The tell is the borrowed authority: a classical sage's portrait takes the place a ruler's or founder's portrait would occupy on a note, so the new state's money carries the moral prestige of an older tradition.
