A Vietnamese-language sheet (code SP-1594) promises that rural-construction programmes will give 'our children and grandchildren' a prosperous life, and shows a close portrait of an elderly man with a cigarette and a bowl, a breeding sow with piglets, a new footbridge with children and a new school. The text lists houses, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges and ends 'We can be proud of these fine improvements.' Only completed or promised benefits appear, and the headline rests on an unmeasurable promise.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN Thanks to the rural construction programme, our children and grandchildren will enjoy a prosperous, fine life. Under the government's self-help projects, the people are building houses, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and so on. They are also applying new farming methods and improving livestock raising with the best breeding stock. We can be proud of these fine improvements. Through a self-help project this new bridge has been completed to improve the people's daily life. Under the rural construction programme, good breeding pigs have been issued to farmers to raise production. New schools have been built so that children have a place to study and later become useful people.
