"Art Week in Chicago", 1941 US poster: A blue line portrait of a woman wearing a winged headpiece marked 'I will'

"Art Week in Chicago" (Illinois WPA Art Project, 1936-1941)

A blue line portrait of a woman wearing a winged headpiece marked 'I will', with an eagle, stands on an easel above 'Art Week in Chicago by proclamation of Hon. Edward J. Kelly, Mayor'. The tell: the mayor's proclamation and the national bird give a week of exhibitions the look of a public occasion.

A poster by the Illinois WPA Art Project, dated 1941 from a verso stamp of 25 March, made for Chicago Mayor Edward J. Kelly and the Chicago Board of Education Art Department. A blue line portrait of a woman in a winged headpiece marked 'I will', with an eagle, stands on an easel above the words announcing Art Week, 16th to 22nd March, by proclamation of the Mayor. The record notes that it promotes the work-relief art programme that produced it. Transfer lends the mayor's proclamation and the eagle to the event, and 'I will', the Chicago motto, serves as a glittering generality.
