Beijing, remarked one, is different from the rest of China: "This is where the power lies." BEIJING MAYOR ON ROLE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OW231652 Beijing XINHUA Domestic Service in Chinese 1424 GMT 23 Dec 86 [By reporters He Qing and Zhang Huixian] [Text] Beijing, 23 Dec (XINHUA) -- Chen Xitong, mayor of Beijing Municipality, this evening attended a get-together of cultural activists of schools of higher learning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to greet the coming New Year's Day. He said to the students: "I hope you will cherish the fine conditions provided by the people and study hard to be ready to make contributions to China's four modernizations." More than 500 cultural activists from some 70 schools of higher learning in Beijing, including those from Beijing University and Qinghua University, attended this evening's get-together. Since early December, schools of higher learning in Beijing have held cultural activities and art festivals. More than 100,000 university students have taken part in those cultural activities including performances of theatrical works, singing, dancing, and writing poems. He Dongchang, vice minister in charge of the State Education Commission, and Wang Meng, minister of culture, both praised and affirmed university students' enthusiasm and talent in holding art festivals. They are convinced that those activities have enriched university students' cultural life and have a positive meaning in raising university students' cultural level. Li Ximing, secretary of the Beijing Municipal CPC Committee, was among those who attended this evening's get-together.
