Communist Subversion in Latin America poster, PPB-417 (Spanish poster, multiple distribution centres)

A Spanish-language photo-and-text sheet on a black border, 'La subversion comunista en America Latina'. Photographs of heaped ammunition and rows of rifles (Venezuela), pamphlets and a framed portrait (Peru, Colombia), seized weapons (Brazil, Argentina) support text that Cuba organises and directs subversion across the hemisphere. The tell is fear-appeal and card-stacking: seized material carries the argument, loaded words such as 'insidiosa' are used, and no view from those accused appears.

COMMUNIST SUBVERSION IN LATIN AMERICA

Communist subversive action, organised and directed by Cuba, is at present a constant threat to the security of all the nations of the Western Hemisphere.
This insidious intervention in the internal affairs of free nations comes from the Latin American country itself in which the Communists, on seizing command, frustrated the people's hopes of freedom and justice.
Since no free nation has ever opted for communism, the Communists use arms and propaganda to make their way to power whenever possible.
The discovery of a cache of several tons of arms, ammunition and equipment (see photos at right) exposed a terrorist plot whose aim was to prevent national elections from being held in Venezuela in 1964. The Organization of American States (OAS) accused Cuba of aggression for supplying the terrorists.
On this page can be seen photographic evidence of subversive activities revealed in other parts of Latin America, such as Peru, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

VENEZUELA

PERU
Peruvian authorities discovered last year a large quantity of Communist subversive propaganda pamphlets titled "The Peruvian Revolution on the March" (left), as well as arms and manuals on explosives. The Minister of Government of Peru, Mr. Juan Languasco, announced that the shipment came from Cuba, "where many young people of Peru and other nations are trained to cause unrest."

BRAZIL
Nine "trade delegates" of Communist China were arrested and later deported when the anti-Communist revolution triumphed in Brazil in April 1964. The police found in their possession the cache of arms seen at right, together with a list of Brazilian democratic leaders who were to be assassinated. The Chinese, faithful to Communist tactics, entered the country under false pretences and worked constantly to undermine peace.

COLOMBIA
Communist subversion in Colombia generally takes the form of organised banditry. To strengthen Communist domination of the bandit groups, Cuban Communist propaganda material is smuggled into the country (left). The propaganda seen in the photograph was found in the hideout of a bandit chief of the Marquetalia sector. For the Communists, material that spreads hatred is as important as machine guns and bombs.

ARGENTINA
The distance between Argentina and Cuba has not prevented Cuban-trained guerrillas from operating on Argentine territory. The arms and equipment displayed (right) in Buenos Aires were captured from a group of Castro's agents. The Organization of American States proceeded to isolate Communist Cuba from the rest of the Hemisphere because of such alarming activities.
