FBIS Daily Report: Damascus Domestic Service on the 'treasonous Camp David agreements' (28 Sep 1978)
Syria section of the FBIS report for 28 September 1978, ten days after the Camp David Accords were signed. V. 28 Sep 78 S Y R I A H 1 DEFENSE MINISTER ADDRESSES GRADUATING OFFICERS JN272106Y Damascus Domestic Service in Arabic 1915 GMT 27 Sep 78 JN [Excerpt] Under the patronage of His Excellency President Hafiz al-Asad, commander in chief of the army and the armed forces, a graduation ceremony of war officers of the class of martyr Maj Gen 'Umar al-Abrash took place in Homs today, President al-Asad deputized Gen Mustafa Talas, deputy commander in chief and minister of defense, to attend the ceremony. General Talas delivered a speech on the occasion, in which he stressed the importance of adding a new group of officers to our steadfast armed forces to enable it to carry out its heroic role in the service of the sacred cause. General Talas pointed out the capitulationist steps which the president of the Egyptian regime has been pursuing until now. Talas said that As-Sadat's joining the enemy ranks increases our determination to make up for what the enemy would have allotted to the western front. [...] DAMASCUS REPORTS ARRESTS IN EGYPT, ANTIAGREEMENT LEAFLETS JN271328Y Damascus Domestic Service in Arabic 0415 GMT 27 Sep 78 JN [Excerpt] Last Saturday, the very same day that As-Sadat returned to Cairo after signing the treasonous Camp David agreements, Egyptian security organs arrested many patriotic and progressive elements. Some 40 persons have been arrested, including 'Abd al-Hamid ash-Shaykh, member of the secretariat of the National Progressive Unionist Grouping Party; engineer Subhi Labib; Shawki al-Kurdi; poet Mastafa Zaki and several trade unionists in Hulwan.
