Content note: 1864 Democratic print with a racist dialect caricature of a Black soldier. This object is shown as it was published. Why
How free ballot is protected!
Lithograph drawn by Joseph E. Baker (Boston) for the Democratic (McClellan) side. A Black Union soldier in dialect caricature bars a one-legged white veteran from putting a McClellan ballot in a stuffed box, while election officials look away; a handwritten note on the LOC copy reads 'Lincoln-McClellan campaign 1864'. It charges the Republicans with electoral corruption and with backing equal rights for Black Americans.
