Kim Il-sung statue and Mansudae Grand Monument, Pyongyang (photographed 2010)
A bronze statue of Kim Il-sung, one arm extended, stands on a low plinth before a columned building with a mountain mosaic on its wall. To the left a long bronze relief group of marching figures stands before two red stylised flags. The photographer's note says there are over 500 statues of Kim in the country. The tell: transfer, the state's founding and revolutionary history are set in one public ensemble around the leader's figure, with the mass of the people placed in relief beside him.
