Content note: Cartoon caricatures of Axis figures being set alight, including a stereotyped caricature of a Japanese soldier, shown as printed. This object is shown as it was published. Why
Let's put the heat on the Axis "retreat"! Payroll savings
Black-and-white cartoon: 'Willie Warbond,' a cheerful man in a sweater, stands on a giant matchbox marked 'Payroll Savings' and lights two matches. One sets alight the seat of a leaping Axis figure at left. At right a second caricatured figure in a plumed cap and boots walks off, carrying a sword. The pun on 'retreat' and the everyman figure carry the appeal.
