Allende's radio and television greeting for International Women's Day

Allende's radio and television greeting for International Women's Day

Cover of the presidential press office's typed transcript of a short address Allende gave by radio and television on 8 March 1973. The text names Fresia, Guacolda, Javiera Carrera and Gabriela Mistral as 'Mothers of the Fatherland' and asks listeners to remember them, so their standing is lent to the government (transfer). It closes on a freer, more democratic and more humane fatherland, with no programme attached (glittering generalities).

[Page 2] ESTIMADOS COMPATRIOTAS:

[Page 1, cover] GREETING OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, COMRADE SALVADOR ALLENDE GOSSENS, BY RADIO AND T.V. ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY.- Santiago, March 8, 1973.- Office of Information and Broadcasting of the Presidency of the Republic

[Page 2] DEAR COMPATRIOTS: On a day of such significance as today's, "International Women's Day," I want to send my fraternal greeting to all Chilean women, especially the peasant woman, the professional, the worker or simply the housewife. Our nationality is, to a great extent, the fruit of the effort, self-denial and sacrifice of our women. We Chileans have Mothers of the Fatherland; heroines whose examples light the way of our lives. Today I want to invite you, comrades, to remember with gratitude and moved pride Fresia, Guacolda, Tegualda, Paula Jaraquemada, Cornelia Olivares and Javiera Carrera, women who contributed decisively to Chile forging its condition as a free, democratic and sovereign country. Let us also recall that Chilean woman born in a modest home; of gentle speech, peaceful gaze and immense spiritual strength. A compatriot who had no children of her own and who nevertheless was, and is, the mother of generations of children. A provincial schoolteacher, Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, Gabriela Mistral, our first Nobel Prize in Literature. When we speak of women, we also speak of the child. The mother-and-child pairing is one of the fundamental concerns of the Government I preside over. When I have maintained that the only privileged one in Chile is and will be the child, I have affirmed it considering that the child is not an individual entity but one vital, indissoluble and biologically bound to the mother who gives it life. I do not believe this is the right moment to give an account of what my Government has done in favour of the Chilean woman. CONTINUES.-

[Page 3] 2.- No one knows it better than the anonymous comrade, traditionally oppressed and dispossessed, who now knows a different life, because at last her dignity as a woman has been restored. It could not be otherwise, since this is a Government for you, dear compatriots, and because I can state with full authority that one of the principles that has guided my political life is, and has been, my constant insistence on granting women the prerogatives that belong to them and that had for centuries been denied them. Exactly a year ago, I also sent you a brief greeting on this day of universal commemoration. Since then until today we have advanced a great deal, and each day we will advance further, all together, women and men, firmly bound in a noble mission: to build a freer, more democratic and more humane fatherland. The Fatherland is also a woman and in her womb a different Chile is beating. There is no woman who does not have a responsibility and a place in this passionate enterprise. Our struggle is for Chile and its people, and we essentially do it so that the Chilean woman may reach the legal, social and human rights that it is indispensable and just to grant. Today more than ever, I am with you, dear comrades and friends, with the Chilean woman. --ooOoo-- TRANSCRIPTIONS O.I.R./vvp.cih.-
