Anba' Moussawarah (Pictorial News) No. 32/54: Sports in Pictures (illustrated news sheet distributed in Beirut)

A two-page photo spread headed 'Sports in Pictures': a long-distance swimmer, a pole vaulter, two boxers, a pit stop at the Indianapolis race and boys' yacht fleets, each with an English caption. It presents American sporting achievement and amateur sport to a Middle Eastern readership. The tell is card-stacking: only successes and wholesome scenes are selected, with captions that note the athletes' firsts, records and immigrant descent.

GREATEST LONG-DISTANCE SWIMMER is the unofficial woman's title held by Florence Chadwick of the United States. POLE VAUTER Milton Campbell scores first in the National Amateur Athletic Union decathlon in the U.S. Campbell, youngest member of the U.S. Olympics team, won also the 110-meter hurdles and the shot put competitions.

EUROPEAN-U.S. BOXERS tie 5 matches to 5 in amateur "Golden Gloves" competition in Chicago. Here, Ilkka Koski of Finland (right) battles Garvin Sawyer of Chicago in the heavyweight event. Fight was stopped--no winner--when the Finn was cut over the eye.

QUICK CHANGE of tires, a drink of water, and Bill Vukovich is off to win the 800-kilometer Indianapolis Speedway race. The 36-year-old former automobile mechanic is an American of Slovenian descent.

BERMUDA RACE of 1954 (see cover) drew a record of 77 yachts, manned by 500 yachtsmen, from Newport Rhode Island southeastward to Bermuda -- 635 nautical miles. Most U.S. yacht clubs have junior fleets of youngsters (above) who learn to rig, sail and race their own boats.
