VICTORY AT QUANG TRI (20-5-67)

North Vietnam has used the Demilitarised Zone as an operating base for large-scale attacks on the Republic of Vietnam. In Operation Lam Son 54, Airborne Task Force 2, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Dao Van Hung, attacked and brought down more than 300 North Vietnamese troops on the territory of the Republic of Vietnam in the Demilitarised Zone. Our side lost 12 dead and 48 wounded. Many Communist-bloc weapons and much enemy ammunition were seized. Tonnes of rice and tools were found in a secret cache in the Demilitarised Zone. Immediately after the operation, the friendly forces withdrew from the Demilitarised Zone.

Lieutenant Colonel Dao Van Hung.

An adviser to Task Force 2 of the Vietnamese Airborne Division calling an air strike on an enemy village in the Demilitarised Zone.

Close support from the Vietnamese Air Force helped the paratroopers defeat a very large number of North Vietnamese troops sheltering in trenches around a village in the Demilitarised Zone. The burning house photographed here exploded afterwards, showing that it was a large ammunition store.

The smiling faces show the very high fighting spirit of the Republic of Vietnam's soldiers after the great victory of the previous day in the clash with the North Vietnamese.

Major Tran Quoc Lich, battalion commander, talking with the Task Force commander after a fierce battle with the North Vietnamese ('bọn Bắc-Việt'). His 3rd Airborne Battalion killed 150 North Vietnamese on the spot and about 50 others were carried off by their comrades. His brave fighters seized two 82 mm mortars, one 75 mm recoilless rifle, one 82 mm recoilless rifle (probably the first recoilless rifle of this type captured), two .50-calibre anti-aircraft guns and 15 rifles.
