WALL NEWSPAPER OF THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES IN EL SALVADOR HERALDO GRAFICO THE TRAGEDY OF 3 MAY AND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION In the early hours of 3 May, San Salvador and neighbouring towns suffer the effects of an earthquake that leaves a tragic toll of more than 100 dead, 2,918 buildings (mostly houses) ruined, thousands of people homeless and material damage totalling more than 53 million colones. Immediately, the National Emergency Committee organises aid for the victims of the disaster, with the spontaneous, courageous and determined collaboration of the Red Cross, the Scouts Association, the Security Forces, CARITAS, private individuals, and many other official and private relief bodies. [body text of these six items not transcribed] NORTH AMERICAN COOPERATION.—Less than 24 hours after receiving a request for aid from President Julio A. Rivera, President Lyndon B. Johnson gives instructions that, from Panama, aircraft of the Southern Command of the Armed Forces of the United States carry emergency aid to San Salvador without delay. The first of them (photo) lands at 6 in the morning of 5 May and begins unloading operations. [continues] UNITED STATES INDEPENDENCE DAY 4 July 1776-1965 On 4 July 1965 the United States celebrates the 189th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which expressed the determination of the people to govern themselves. The North American people's struggle for liberty, the deeds and fiery words of their leaders, have since inspired the peoples of other countries to seek independence. The photographs of four patriots of the Revolution appear in the panels below. GEORGE WASHINGTON led the North American armies to victory in the War of the Revolution. In 1789 he became the first President of the United States and, four years later, was re-elected. THOMAS JEFFERSON originally wrote the Declaration of Independence. [continues] BENJAMIN FRANKLIN spoke in favour of the happiness, well-being and dignity of all humanity in his writings of the Revolutionary Era. [continues] JOHN ADAMS, second President of the United States (1797-1801), was a member of the committee of five men charged with writing the Declaration of Independence.
