NEWS IN PICTURES NEAR EASTERN, South Asian and African delegates were among the war veterans from 22 countries attending the World Veterans Federation Council in Washington. The veterans, 18,000,000 strong, seek to strengthen bonds of friendship among nations. CAMEL RIDING American Ambassador Avra M. Warren finishes camel race in Ankara. The race was a feature of the U.S. Independence Day celebration in Turkey, attended by 3,000 Americans and their Turkish guests. IRAQI CHIEF OF STAFF Muhammed Rafiq Arif is awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit by Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, in Washington. The award recognized Major General Arif's "meritorious service in strengthening relationships between Iraq and the United States." LADIES SINGLES CHAMPION Maureen Connolly from the United States defends her tennis championship, at Wimbledon in a match with Louise Brough. FIRST ALL-AFRICAN Legislative Assembly was elected by men and women voters of the British West African colony of the Gold Coast last month. With 1,200,000 persons voting, the election marked a final step in the orderly evolution of the Gold Coast through home rule to complete independence and dominion status within the British Commonwealth of Nations. At left, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Gold Coast Prime Minister, addresses a pre-election rally of 10,000 voters. Below, voters stand in line at an Accra polling station to cast their ballot in the general election.
