Front page of the Los Angeles anarchist weekly Regeneración, months after the US occupation of Veracruz, led by a speech headlined as blaming the 'intervention' on the bourgeoisie's fear of the 'red flag'. It labels the landing 'an act of pirates' and 'the brutal assault of the bandit' and rejects the flag-insult explanation outright, offering a single class motive.

The Fear of the Bourgeoisie Is the Cause of the Intervention

SPEECH delivered at the meeting organised by the Regeneración Group, of Santa Paula, California, on the night of 4 July 1914, at Balcom Hall.

Comrades:
Hypocrisy, unrestrained ambition, fear: these are the cursed ingredients that go into the making of that act of pirates known by the name of American Intervention. The outrage of Veracruz is not the gallant act of the man who steps between the executioner and the victim, but the brutal assault of the bandit carried out by surprise and from behind. The taking of Veracruz by the forces of Yankee capitalism is not the bold assault on the trench, in full daylight and with blood and fire, but the blow struck in the darkness by an invisible arm. The hand that planted on the heights of the surprised city the flag of the stripes and the stars was not the robust hand of the hero inspired by high ideals, but the trembling hand of the businessman who can just as well empty the people's pockets in one swipe as set his dogs on that same people when it shows little willingness to be robbed.

The Fear of the Red Flag.
The bourgeoisie of the United States and that of the whole world look with dread on the fact that the Mexican worker has taken the work of his emancipation into his own hands.

The Insult to the Flag.
[...] It is a lie that the insult to the flag of the United States precipitated the war with Mexico!
