El Correo Grafico poster, Alliance for Progress issue, 1965 US poster: A red-and-black Spanish bulletin from the U.S. Embassy

El Correo Grafico poster, Alliance for Progress issue (Spanish pictorial bulletin distributed in San Jose, Costa Rica)

A red-and-black Spanish bulletin from the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica explaining the Alianza para el Progreso. A central text says many people wrongly see it as 'one more programme of loans and aid' and calls it joint action; eight photos label projects (industry, an experiment station, housing, rural credit, electrification, roads, a health programme) with their funders. The tell is card-stacking: only successes are shown, each captioned with its financing.

What it is and how it should be understood
THE ALLIANCE FOR PROGRESS
Many people are mistaken. They consider the Alliance for Progress to be "one more programme of loans and aid" from the United States to Latin America. Nothing could be further from the mind of the one who was the principal driver of the Alliance for Progress: the late President John F. Kennedy.
The Alliance —as its name indicates— is a plan of joint action, in which all our countries have united to accelerate their economic and social development, within a framework of respect for freedom and for the dignity of man.
Thus each of the countries signatory to the Charter of Punta del Este took on the commitment to set in motion, within its own borders, this Alliance in order to satisfy the aspirations for work, a roof and land, school and health.
The Alliance for Progress is not only the commitment of governments. In its realisation, the private sector, individuals, groups and communities that wish to progress through their own effort and self-help have a very important role.
EL CORREO GRAFICO presents today some aspects of the Alliance for Progress in Costa Rica. These projects and achievements highlight the way in which the Costa Rican private sector, the Costa Rican public sector, the Agency for International Development of the United States, the Inter-American Development Bank and other international entities have joined their efforts and resources to bring to a good end the common task that the countries forming the Alliance for Progress set themselves.
AGRO-LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT. Rural Credit, for expansion of crops in Alajuela. Financing: A.I.D., National Bank of Costa Rica and farmers.
RURAL ELECTRIFICATION. New transmission lines to Barrio Jesús de Atenas. Financing: I.C.E., I.D.B. and rural communities.

HEALTH PROGRAMMES. Mobile Health Programme for rural populations. Financing: Ministry of Health, A.I.D. and communities.
