Highways to Progress

At the opening of the Korat-Nong Khai highway on 27 Jan. 08 [B.E. 2508, 1965], Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn, Prime Minister, said---

"---This highway will be of great benefit to the people and the resources of the northeast, because it will help link communities, fields and markets in many important localities closer together, and will help economic development advance and expand--travel and transport will be convenient and fast in every season--"

Rice and field farmers benefit visibly, because the cost of moving rice, jute, sugar, timber and other goods to market has fallen from 18 satang per kilogram to only 12 satang.

This road lets people travel to earn a living more conveniently and quickly; from Nong Khai to Bangkok takes only 8 hours.

Rice, fish, food and other goods sent from Thailand to Laos are carried along this road and across the Mekong by motor ferry at Nong Khai province.
