Đài Kỷ-Niệm Hy-Vọng, 1965 US poster: A Vietnamese-language sheet (code SP-2152) presents the Thanh Dien resettlement

Đài Kỷ-Niệm Hy-Vọng (The "Monument to Hope" at Thanh Dien)

A Vietnamese-language sheet (code SP-2152) presents the Thanh Dien resettlement community in Tay Ninh province: an aerial photograph of laid-out plots, a model or photograph of a monument of two leaning pillars on a circular plaza, and a long text on what the pillars symbolise. It lists what the settlers receive (a 1,000 square metre plot, a school, market, clinic, power house) and calls the site a Viet Cong base area for 20 years. The sheet gives the benefits and the symbolism and omits who was moved there and why.

MONUMENT OF HOPE

With the combined efforts of the people of Tay Ninh and the forces of the Free World, thousands of refugee compatriots have been resettled in this new community. Each family receives a plot of 1,000 square metres [thước] on which to build a house and a share of farmland now being prepared for rice planting. This rapidly developing community includes a hamlet school, a market, a medical station, a power house, a school of 10 classrooms, a circular plaza and a road system.

The Thanh Dien Resettlement Project seen from above, a community established in the middle of a vast dense forest, a Viet Cong base area for the past 20 years.

A "Monument of Hope" has just been erected by the Philippine Civic Action Group in the circular plaza right in the centre of the community.

THE MONUMENT OF HOPE AT THANH DIEN

The memorial built at Thanh Dien will symbolise the hope of achieving the greatest aspiration of mankind: the aspiration to attain human dignity. This memorial will represent the hope not only of the Vietnamese people themselves but also of all those who have come from afar to help the Vietnamese attain that aspiration.

The two pillars first of all symbolise the body and the soul of man. Bound to worldly life, our body and spirit are held in one form, can never be fully in harmony, and so always turn toward the infinite, seeking the Supreme Being who brought us forth, in the hope of reaching lofty aspirations, of escaping worldly suffering and advancing to human dignity. The residents of Thanh Dien are now all people who were fortunate enough to survive and escape the Vietnam war. But because they have found a refuge on this motherland, they have the right to hope to attain that dignity in a brighter tomorrow. [One phrase in the second sentence, 'chưa đựng', is faint in the scan and rendered here by sense.]

The two pillars at the Monument of Hope also remind us of the Vietnamese people and those who came to try to help us. Although working together in close harmony, we cannot become one, yet we wish our lives and theirs to hope together for everyone to attain human dignity.

Finally, the two pillars also symbolise the people and the government of Vietnam. One side is life with reason and feeling, the other solemnly operates according to the laws it has made. Both sides developing in parallel and leaning on each other will lead the nation to bring human dignity to every person, even the humblest.

A monument like this could be raised only at Thanh Dien or some other place like Thanh Dien, for Thanh Dien has been a battlefield for more than 20 years, where people lost all fellow-feeling, where people were driven only by the wish to destroy. Now this place is nurturing hope: not only hope for peace and for a brighter future, but also hope of attaining a still higher human dignity.
