PICTORIAL REVIEW

Volume I Number 18

The new Haile Selassie I Military Academy at Harar will, when the wishes of Emperor Haile Selassie I are fulfilled, serve as a high level training center not only for Ethiopia's future Army officers, but also for young men from friendly neighbouring countries.
In dedicating the Academy during October, His Imperial Majesty said that the officer cadets "will constitute an impregnable bulwark against those who would violate Ethiopia's glorious tradition of liberty which, for centuries, has been handed down from generation to generation."
His Majesty extended special thanks to Prime Minister Nehru of India for the assignment of a "fine team of officers to staff" the Academy. Col. N.S. Rawlley, Indian Army Officer and Commandant of the Academy, called attention to the "considerable assistance which has been given to us by all Ministries and Departments of the Imperial Ethiopian Government and the United States Military Assistance Advisory Group in Ethiopia."

A typical Academy cadet.
His Majesty, accompanied by Col Rawlley, inspects the obstacle course. At rear is Prince Wosen Segud, newly created Duke of Harar, and Prince Dawit Makonnen.
Cadets hurdle a low wall as bombs explode and rifle shots resound across the obstacle course.
Cadets scale the high wall at the end of the obstacle course.
This cadet is about to leap across an obstacle course pit.
Cadets demonstrate their prowess as they leap, bayonets at the ready, at dummies
