'Toki no tatefuda' (Notice Board of the Times), Shashin Shūhō No. 200, page 2 (24 December 1941)

A full page of white type over a photograph of a rising-sun flag, in the government picture weekly sixteen days after Pearl Harbor. It calls on readers to sink enemy warships, plant the Hinomaru on enemy land, and meet air raids, changes in daily life and groundless rumours with gratitude and resolve, not drunken or frenzied excitement. The flag and the phrase for the Emperor's majesty are attached to everyday restraint (transfer); the virtue words name no testable aim (glittering generalities).

Showa 16 (1941), 12th month, 24th day Notice Board of the Times Thursday

Sink the enemy's great warships to the seabed!
Plant the Hinomaru on enemy territory!
The day the August Majesty shines brilliantly:
we must not be drunk (with it),
we must not run bloodshot (frenzied).
To enemy aircraft raids,
to upheavals in daily life,
to rumours with no root:
here too we will drive in the Hinomaru.
We will answer deep emotion with gratitude and resolve.
