VIET CONG BURN AND DESTROY THE CAO DAI TEMPLE IN TAN THANH HAMLET (VINH LONG) At 12:30 on the night of 9 into 10-8-1964, an armed Viet Cong squad came to terrorise the people of Tan Thanh hamlet, Tan Hanh village, Chau Thanh district, Vinh Long. They killed the old woman who tended the incense at the Cao Dai temple in this hamlet, named Duong-Thi-Thom, aged 64, and then burned down the temple together with the old woman, whose husband is named Tran-Hoang-Thai, aged 60. When the authorities and local people came to help and put out the fire, the old woman had been burned to charcoal. In addition, another old woman named Tran-Thi-Tu, aged 55, who lived nearby, was also shot by them and badly wounded, feared unlikely to survive. The material loss of the Cao Dai temple above amounts to 69,900 dong. The blood-thirsty act of the Viet Cong lackeys above caused the people extreme anger; the people therefore sternly condemned it and did not spare curses on the blood-thirsty red devils, because this act proved to us once again that the Viet Cong not only kill old men and women but also burn and destroy pagodas and temples, violating the people's freedom of belief. The Captain, chief of Chau Thanh district, Vinh Long, comforting the victims and the Cao Dai followers in the hamlet. The Cao Dai temple destroyed by the Viet Cong. The charred remains of the victim being prepared for burial.
