A Home and Land for Tran Van Vi

A vertical photo-sheet (code SP-1218) tells the story of a named refugee farmer, Tran Van Vi, who with his family is said to have escaped Viet Cong terror and been given a plot of 50 by 30 thuoc and 5,900 piastres to build a house in An Giang province. Photographs show his house, his family indoors and rural-construction cadres helping newcomers build shelters. A single named household stands for a programme, and the closing banner turns the local project into a national promise.

A ROOF AND A PIECE OF LAND FOR MR. TRAN VAN VI

Mr. Tran Van Vi and his family escaped the yoke of Viet Cong terror. On arriving in An-Giang Province, they were helped by the Republic of Vietnam government with a piece of land 50 x 30 thuoc wide and a sum of 5,900 piastres to build a house. Mr. Vi now works full time in the rice fields. In his spare time he works to raise the house foundation to avoid floods. Mr. Vi says he has set aside enough rice to eat for the next 6 months and is now trying to save to buy a few pigs. He plans to plant bananas and sweet potatoes. Many refugee compatriots have migrated to the same province as Mr. Vi; they are helped by the Rural Construction Cadres to set up temporary shelters and then, like Mr. Vi, to settle permanently in the new Hamlets of the refugee compatriots to make a living.
