KONTUM TIẾN-BỘ [Highland-language subheading, not transcribed] HÌNH ẢNH THỜI SỰ HÀNG THÁNG CÁCH THỨC CHỌN LỰA, CHUẨN BỊ MỘT KHU ĐẤT TRỒNG RAU. KONTUM PROGRESS [Highland-language subheading, not transcribed] MONTHLY NEWS PICTURES HOW TO CHOOSE AND PREPARE A VEGETABLE PLOT. [Highland-language subheading, not transcribed] Highland compatriots who are refugees from Communism in the New Life hamlets are being encouraged and helped with the means to exploit a new source of income: growing vegetables. Specialists have been sent to the hamlets to teach planting methods. Besides giving the family one more daily dish, the income earned also helps the people raise their standard of living. [Parallel text, not transcribed] Then dig a deep ditch all round the bed so water drains away and the seeds do not rot from waterlogging. [Parallel text, not transcribed] Level the soil on the bed and mark the rows for sowing. Use a stick the width of a finger to scratch a furrow about 2 centimetres deep to drop the seeds in evenly; along the furrow, put the seeds about 2 centimetres apart. Then rake soil with the hand over the sown seeds. If the seeds are very small, a board can be used to press them firmly against the soil so they sprout more easily. Do not sow seeds too deep, or they may rot and not grow. [Parallel text, not transcribed] To prepare for growing vegetables we must choose an airy plot with enough water for irrigation, sheltered from the wind. First the fertiliser must be mixed evenly and broken up very fine for sowing. [Parallel text, not transcribed] Once the seed bed is prepared, we must keep the soil constantly damp, that is, water about every 2 days, until the seedlings sprout and it is time to pull them up and transplant them elsewhere.
