Late "Hero" Nguyen Van Be

A red-and-white sheet asks 'How can such a strange thing happen?' and says Communist media had for months praised 'martyr' Nguyễn Văn Bé, said to have died blowing himself up among armoured vehicles. It shows Bé holding Hanoi's Tiền Phong of 7 December 1966, a printed portrait, and a statue said to depict him, and quotes him denying the press account. The tell is the counter-story built on the opponent's own media, resting on one quoted statement.

[Small newspaper column beneath the portrait, not fully legible: it praises Bé, 'người đoàn viên thanh niên anh hùng', and calls on youth to follow his example in fighting the Americans.]

WHY IS THERE SUCH A STRANGE THING?
"MARTYR" NGUYEN-VAN-BE READS THE NEWS OF HIS OWN DEATH

For many months in succession, Communist newspapers in the North and in the South have loudly extolled the heroic death of "martyr" Nguyen-Van-Be. The Communists urge young people to follow Nguyen-Van-Be's example in emulating for merit. According to the Communists' story, Mr. Nguyen-Van-Be was captured alive while escorting a boat carrying weapons on the My An canal on 30 May 1966, after fighting like a tiger. After being captured he was forced by the enemy to explain how to use a mine he had been carrying. Seizing that chance, he clasped the mine and threw himself at an armoured vehicle to kill himself.
The Communists proclaim that Be sacrificed himself to kill 69 Vietnamese and American soldiers. What a heroic act indeed!

HERE IS A PICTURE OF A STATUE of martyr Nguyen-Van-Be, published on the front page of the magazine Van Nghe, published in Hanoi on 6 January 1967.
The statue depicts Be at the moment he is sacrificing himself in battle.

BUT, PLEASE LISTEN TO WHAT BE SAYS:
"We were escorting a convoy of boats carrying weapons on the canal through My-An district (Dinh-Tuong province), when we heard the army of the Republic of Vietnam firing, and I hurriedly jumped into the canal to hide, but afterwards I was captured at once. I never did the things they described in the newspapers. Why did the Front make things up like that?"

This is "martyr" Be, alive and in good health. He is reading the Hanoi newspaper Tien Phong of 7 December 1966. On the very front page of the paper is the bizarre story of the heroic death of "martyr" Be. Many similar articles have also been read on Hanoi radio and Liberation radio, and many poems and songs have also been composed to extol the late hero Nguyen-Van-Be.
