A Warm Welcome for a Hoi Chanh

A landscape sheet under a red headline shows three photographs of a named Viet Cong squad leader handing his weapon and a document to a South Vietnamese officer. The text says he rallied in late February 1967, will be rewarded for the weapon, and that his unit was hungry and malaria-stricken. The tell is a named individual used as testimony, paired with a stated payment and claims of enemy hardship that the sheet does not source.

RALLIERS ARE GIVEN A WARM WELCOME

Platoon Leader Truong Dinh Nhuan of Viet Cong guerrilla company D.26 returned to the large family of the nation in late February 1967. In this picture, Platoon Leader Nhuan is handing his weapon back to Lieutenant Tran Phai, deputy district chief of Binh Khe. Mr. Nhuan has been taken to visit his mother, wife and children, who now live in a secure area. In the near future he will return to live with his family to rebuild a new, happy life.

Like all other ralliers, Mr. Nhuan receives a reward payment for the weapon he brought back. Platoon Leader Nhuan said that because of conscience, character and humanity he could not stay with the Viet Cong. He said the VC collected people's money and rice and sometimes killed those who opposed them. All the cadres in his unit were hungry and thirsty and most had contracted jungle malaria.
